What is an operating board?

An operating board is a one-page live view of a business (cash, jobs or bookings, people, compliance) read from the tools it already uses, paired with a short morning brief that lists only what needs the owner's decision today.

The definition

An operating board is a one-page view of how a business is running today, built from the systems it already uses (the ledger, the booking or job system, the roster, the compliance register), and refreshed automatically. It is paired with a morning brief: a short message, usually at 6am, that lists only the things needing a decision, each with a link to the document, job or invoice.

Board versus dashboard

A dashboard shows everything a tool knows and leaves the reading to you. A board shows the four or five things the owner actually checks, in the order they check them, and stays quiet when nothing has changed. Most owners look at a dashboard for a week and stop; a board survives because the brief comes to them.

What is on it

It varies by industry, which is the point. A café: yesterday's sales, wages percent, food cost percent, today's roster and bookings, cash and bills due, compliance warnings. A trade business: jobs this week and who is on them, quotes with no reply, cash and retentions, crew tickets expiring, subcontractor insurance. A clinic: bookings and gaps, rebooking rate, claims older than 30 days, registrations and CPD due. Demo boards for 27 industries are here.

What it reads from

Read-only exports and connections: Xero or MYOB for money, the booking or job platform, the roster tool, the compliance register, and the inbox for anything that arrived overnight. Nothing writes back; the board shows and flags, and anything that leaves the business is drafted for a person to check.

How it is built

Stewart Systems builds the board as the Board, on top of the Register and the business's written procedures, in the client's own Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, with the morning brief running on a Claude seat in the client's own account.
